Teaching Fellow

We are seeking a teaching fellow at 0.8FTE to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching within the BSc in Global Studies programme at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS).
 

FASoS is seeking a teaching fellow with a love for teaching and supporting students who would like to contribute to the BSc Global Studies (BSc GS) programme. The BSc GS is a unique programme co-developed and taught by all six faculties of Maastricht University. The programme is built around interdisciplinary interrogation of “wicked problems”, global challenges with complex origins and solutions. 

The programme makes use of problem-based learning (PBL) in a small-scale educational environment. Within PBL, teaching fellows act as tutors who help guide students through authentic learning problems. As a tutor in the BSc GS, you will work in courses that bring together perspectives from a wide range of disciplines, with a strong focus on the social sciences and humanities. Additionally, you will contribute to the teaching of academic skills, as well as quantitative, digital/computational, and/or qualitative research methods. You may also be asked to take on the role of an academic mentor and thesis supervisor for bachelor students.

You will become a member of one of the five departments of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences: Literature & Art, History, Philosophy, Politics, or Society Studies. 

The job description for this entry-level position consists of teaching and assessment activities, including mentoring and thesis supervision. Please note that as an early-career position without a research component, this position is not considered suitable for candidates who have a PhD or are currently working on a PhD thesis.

Requirements

You have a Master’s degree, or will acquire one before the starting date of 2 February, 2026, and have an affinity with interdisciplinary studies, having either an interdisciplinary education background yourself or having worked in a setting that required insights from multiple disciplines.

You have the ability to stimulate student learning and participation in group discussions, and you aspire to be an inspiring and stimulating mentor and supervisor. Previous experience in working with innovative, interdisciplinary learning approaches and problem-based teaching methods are an asset.

An excellent command of English is a prerequisite (Cambridge English Proficiency, level C2, oral and written), the programme’s language of instruction.
You are open to interdisciplinary work and a team player. You are excited to take up new intellectual challenges and to help young learners dive into new and often complex topics. 

What we offer
As Teaching Fellow at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

• Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 10 according to UFO profile Teacher, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €3546,00 and €5538,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
• An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 0,8 FTE. 
• At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences FASoS is a close-knit community of approximately 250 staff members and 2100 students. During breaks and before meetings, you can often find us at our favourite local coffee spot Bandito Espresso.
