Senior Technician – Cell Therapy Lab at MERLN
About the role
The Cell Therapy Lab at Maastricht University is looking for an experienced Senior Laboratory Technician to support our research on cell-based therapies for vision-threatening diseases of the cornea and ocular surface. Our research covers the full spectrum from basic molecular studies and pre-clinical research to clinical translation.
As a key member of the lab, you will:
- Maintain high-quality cell cultures, particularly induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs);
- Perform molecular and cellular assays, including qPCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and histological stainings;
- Contribute to pre-clinical in vivo studies;
- Support project and laboratory management, ensuring smooth operation of research and educational activities;
- Optionally, participate in teaching activities.
We are looking for someone with strong laboratory skills who can work independently, is proactive, flexible, and communicative. Prior knowledge of ophthalmology is not required, but a willingness to learn is essential.
What You Bring
We are seeking an experienced technician, ideally with a PhD or equivalent expertise, who:
- Has high proficiency in English (Dutch is not required).
- Has hands-on experience in:
o Cell culture, particularly pluripotent stem cells.
o Cell and molecular biology, including qPCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence.
o Pre-clinical in vivo studies (holding an Art. 9 certification or equivalent).
o Lab and project management, including training, and organizational skills.

What we offer
As a Senior Technician at MERLN Institute, you will join the most international university in the Netherlands. We offer you:
- Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 8 or 9 according to UFO profile Research Officer, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €3.382,00 and €5.057,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
- An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 0.8 - 1.0 FTE . Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
- 29 vacation days (full-time) and four additional days off.
