PhD position: Public Economics or Urban Economics

The School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University offers a 4-year PhD position for students with a (Research) Master degree or equivalent in the Department of Microeconomics and Public Economics.

The Department of Microeconomics and Public Economics is looking for a PhD candidate in Public Economics or Urban Economics to investigate the interplay between public policy, housing markets, and economic inequality. Relevant fields in economics include taxation, matching, real estate economics, regional economics, welfare economics, environmental economics, political economy, and applied microeconomics.

 

The PhD candidate will closely collaborate with researchers working on projects in these fields. Among other things, these projects analyze the consequences of house price booms on the socio-economic segregation of cities, the impact of taxes on homeownership and house prices, misallocation on the housing market and potential remedies, the welfare effects of policy changes, the differential exposure of poor and rich households to climate change, and the political economy of carbon taxes.

 

Requirements
In order to qualify, you must have successfully completed a Master’s degree (MSc or MPhil) in Economics, Econometrics, Finance, or a related area (or will do so by the summer of 2025) and be competent in written and spoken English. Knowledge of econometric methods, statistical software (e.g., Stata or R), and/or experience in working with (big) data are beneficial. Graduation from a two-year Master’s programme (120 ECTS) and a quantitative background will be advantages.


In case one does not fulfill the starting requirement yet, sometimes a part-time pre-PhD position can be offered, which allows time to catch up.

 What we offer
As PhD position: Public Economics or Urban Economics at School of Business and Economics, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale P according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €2901,00 and €3707,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 18 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 2,5 years will follow. 
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
