PhD candidate in the area of learning leadership, learning climate and workplace learning

Job Description
The Department of Educational Research and Development (ERD) at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University offers a 4-year PhD position for a candidate with a (Research) Master of Science degree or equivalent, starting in September 2025.

At SBE, we offer a dynamic and challenging job in an internationally oriented organisation where students receive advanced education and scholars conduct exciting research. The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to carry out research within the ERD department, in the context of the topic described below, and within the PhD programme of the Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE). As such, the PhD candidate will contribute to the development and outreach of our research. Working at SBE enables the candidate to be part of an (inter)national network of top universities and renowned scholars.

Within SBE, the ERD department is a leading, international, and dynamic scientific unit with a pleasant and constructive working atmosphere. The quality of the department, as well as the School, is, among other things, reflected by the Triple Crown accreditation by EQUIS, AACSB, and AMBA and the high-quality publications of our scholars. Candidates are expected to enter the doctoral program of GSBE and to deliver a doctoral dissertation within four years.

The selected PhD candidate will work on a project aimed at studying ‘the role of learning leadership in fostering a learning climate within organisations’. The current project analyses how organisations that operate in a competitive environment can create work conditions that foster and support employee development, continuous learning, and innovation. It will focus on how leaders play a decisive role in creating such an environment at different organisational levels: individual, team, and organisation. The primary goal of this PhD project is therefore to advance knowledge on the concept of learning leadership, its defining behaviours, and its impact on learning climate and workplace learning. This PhD project will primarily draw on the scholarly fields of Human Resource Development, Learning Sciences, and Organizational Psychology. Additionally, it will integrate insights from Coaching Research and Leadership Studies to develop a more comprehensive understanding of learning leadership and its role in shaping organisational learning climates. Through a combination of systematic literature review, qualitative and quantitative studies, this PhD project aims to contribute to both theory and practice by defining, measuring, and testing the effects of learning leadership within organizations.
