Lecturer position in Economics

The world is changing rapidly—and so are we. At Maastricht University, your work makes a difference. Whether you inspire students in the classroom, contribute to innovative education, or help strengthen our academic community, you play a vital role. In our international environment, you work together on knowledge that matters—for today and tomorrow.

Lecturer in Economics

  • Our goal: Inspire and guide students in our Economics bachelor’s and master’s programmes.
  • Your colleagues: An international team of dedicated lecturers and researchers within the Macro, International and Labour Economics (MILE) and Microeconomics and Public Economics (MPE) departments.

Our Economics programmes continue to evolve in an international and dynamic context. We build on a strong foundation and are looking to further strengthen the quality of our education. Therefore, we are seeking a lecturer who combines expertise with engagement and enjoys working with students from around the world.

Together with your colleagues, you contribute to education that challenges students to think independently and work collaboratively on solutions. You help create a learning environment where curiosity, interaction, and personal development take centre stage.

What you do

  • You facilitate tutorial groups, supervise bachelor’s theses, and assess assignments and exams.
  • You may also contribute to the coordination of teaching activities.
  • You will be involved in programmes such as the BSc Economics and Business Economics and several MSc programmes, including Economics, Human Decision Sciences, and Economics and Strategy of Emerging Markets.

We are looking for multiple lecturers starting in the academic year ‘26/’27. Hours per week will be discussed during interviews.

What you bring

It’s not about ticking boxes—it’s about who you are and what you bring. Do you recognise yourself in this?

  • Strong academic foundation – You hold a Master’s or PhD degree in Economics, Econometrics, or a related field, with solid results. Or you will finish your Master’s or PhD degree before August 2026.
  • Motivated and engaged – You are passionate about teaching and enjoy guiding and inspiring students.
  • Clear communicator – You explain complex economic concepts in an accessible way and feel comfortable in an international classroom.
  • Collaborative mindset – You enjoy working with colleagues and contribute to an open and supportive team environment.
  • Curious and eager to learn – You are open to innovation in education, including Problem-Based Learning (PBL).
  • Internationally oriented – You are proficient in English; knowledge of Dutch is not needed, but an advantage.

What we offer

At Maastricht University, you will work in an international, open, and engaged environment. We offer:

  • A 12-month contract with an employment scope of 0.5 – 1.0 FTE. The contract may be extended after this period with 24 months.
  • A gross monthly salary between €3,546 and €5,538 (based on full-time employment of 38 hours per week), excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • 29 vacation days (based on full-time), 4 additional public holidays, and the option to accrue up to 12 extra days through compensation hours.
  • Freedom and space to further develop yourself.
  • A close-knit community of colleagues to collaborate with.
  • A solid pension scheme via ABP, company fitness options, and access to extensive sports facilities.
  • An inspiring working environment in the heart of Europe.
