Lecturer or Assistant Professor in Biochemistry

Welcome to Maastricht University!
The world is changing fast, and we are changing with it. At Maastricht University, your work makes a real difference – whether you are exploring the future through research, inspiring students in the classroom, or helping to shape everything that makes our education and research possible.

Are you committed to science education and becoming an active member of a close-knit community of students and staff? Then we are looking for you to support our small-scale, active, student-centred education in sciences.

Maastricht Science Programme (MSP) at the Faculty of Science and Engineering is seeking a Lecturer or Assistant Professor Biochemistry.

  • Our goal: To educate the next generation of scientists through high-quality practical and theoretical education and strengthen our expertise in the chemical foundations of biology.
  • Your colleagues: An international team of educators and researchers within MSP, the Faculty of Science & Engineering, and beyond.

In this role, your teaching and research will strengthen our expertise at the intersection between biology and chemistry. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, biomolecules, enzyme kinetics, metabolic pathways, chemical biology, toxicology, genomics and proteomics, both from a fundamental and applied point of view. Your experience in practical methods and techniques will help our students and staff to expand their skill set and create research opportunities.

As our new colleague, you will actively contribute to our interdisciplinary profile and play an important role in our teaching and research portfolio. You will teach in or lead both theoretical courses and practical sessions, from introductory to advanced levels, and supervise undergraduate student research projects. The role centres on teaching through Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in the classroom and Research-Based Learning (RBL) in practicals and research projects. While primarily a teaching position, it offers modest yet meaningful opportunities to pursue research. You will also have strong prospects for collaboration across Maastricht University and its research institutes.

Are you eager to help prepare the next generation of broadly trained academics of the future? Then we would love to meet you.

What you bring
It’s not about ticking boxes – it’s about who you are and what you bring. Does this sound like you?

  • Scientifically grounded – You hold a PhD in biochemistry, (chemical) biology, or a closely related area within the biological sciences.
  • Academically experienced – Preferably, you have at least 2 years of post-PhD experience in an academic environment.
  • Committed to education – You value high-quality, inclusive teaching and dedicated student supervision. You have experience in teaching and supervising student work. You have a University Teaching Qualification degree (UTQ) or are committed to obtaining one within your 18-month contract.
  • Collaborative and ambitious – You enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration and are motivated to acquire additional funding to support your teaching and research.

What we offer
At Maastricht University, you’ll work in an international, open, and engaging environment. We offer:

  • An 18-month contract with the prospect of a permanent contract based on mutual satisfaction.
  • A gross monthly salary between €4.728,00 and €6.433,00 (based on full-time employment of 38 hours per week). 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • 29 vacation days (based on full-time), four additional days off (Carnival Monday and Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day), and the possibility to accrue up to 12 extra days through compensation hours.
  • Flexible working hours, a home office allowance, and the option to work from home.
  • Freedom and space to shape your work independently and develop your ideas.
  • A close-knit community of colleagues to collaborate and grow with.
  • A solid pension plan via ABP, company fitness schemes, and access to various university sports facilities.
  • An inspiring work environment in the heart of Europe.
