Assistant Professor of European Union Law

Welcome to Maastricht University

The world is changing rapidly, and we are changing along with it. At Maastricht University (UM), your work makes a difference – whether you’re exploring the future as a researcher, inspiring students in the classroom, or helping shape everything that makes our education and research possible.

The position

The Department of European Law at the Faculty of Law is looking for a full-time Assistant Professor of European Union Law (‘Universitair Docent’). The starting date will, in principle, be 15 January 2026. The position combines teaching, research, and management responsibilities.

Our goal: With this position, we aim to strengthen both our research capacity and our educational programs in the field of institutional and substantive European Union law. By contributing to internationally recognized research and to high-quality teaching, you will help train the next generation of lawyers and policymakers for both the Dutch and international labour markets.

Your colleagues: As Assistant Professor, you will be embedded in the Department of European Law, which consists of more than 40 staff members. The Department is responsible for teaching in programmes such as Dutch Law, European Law School (Bachelor and Master), Globalisation and Law (Master), and also contributes to courses at University College Maastricht, University College Venlo, the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Hasselt University in Belgium. Research is carried out within the Faculty’s Research Programme and the Maastricht Centre for European Law (MCEL), where you will collaborate with leading scholars in the field.

What you bring

We are not looking for a checklist, but for talented academics who want to make a difference. Do you recognize yourself in this?

  • You hold a PhD degree in European Union Law (or will have obtained it at the time of appointment).
  • You have proven research and teaching skills.
  • You have a flexible, proactive attitude and can work both independently and in a team.
  • You have strong oral and written skills in English.
  • You are willing to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within two years (if not already in possession). The Faculty will support you in this process.
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is a distinct advantage.

What we offer

At Maastricht University, you will work in an international, open, and inspiring environment. We offer:

  • An employment contract for 18 months (1.0 FTE). Upon proven suitability, this can be converted into a permanent contract.
  • A salary between €4,728 and €6,433 gross per month (scale 11, based on 38 hours per week), depending on experience.
  • 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • 29 vacation days (based on full-time employment), four additional days off, and the possibility to accrue up to 12 extra days through compensation hours.
  • Freedom and space to organise your work independently and develop your own ideas.
  • A solid pension plan (ABP), access to company fitness, and a wide range of sports facilities.
  • An inspiring work environment in the heart of Europe.
  • The terms of employment at Maastricht University are largely set out in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU), with additional UM-specific provisions.
