Assessment Specialist
Welcome to Maastricht University!
Within the new Teaching & Learning Hub of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS), we are working together on innovation of education and assessment. As an Assessment Specialist, you will be part of this team, helping our programmes strengthen and future-proof their assessment practices.
Assessment Specialist
- Our goal: We focus on high-quality assessment that truly works in practice. We aim to connect theory and practice in the right way—without letting one dominate the other.
- Your colleagues: A new multidisciplinary team within the Teaching & Learning Hub of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS).
Good assessment only has real impact when it fits the everyday reality of teachers and study programmes. That’s why we’re looking for an Assessment Specialist who can bridge assessment theory and educational practice.
In this advisory role, you will collaborate with programme directors, course coordinators, lecturers, and educational support staff. You will help improve, innovate, and safeguard assessment practices—always with an eye for what’s feasible. You provide ideas, share good examples, ask the right questions, and help shape next steps. You will collect and develop materials (including best practices) to make the latest insights in assessment directly accessible to teaching staff.
You will contribute to the development of new faculty-wide assessment policies, assessment formats, quality assurance, and innovation. You will also play a role in teacher professionalisation related to assessment.
Starting in September, FASoS will begin revising its Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. You will take an active role in this process, contributing ideas about assessment formats, quality, and innovation. You also keep track of developments within and outside the university and bring innovative ideas back into our programmes.
The assessment landscape at FASoS is diverse and constantly evolving. Compared to other faculties, there is a strong focus on written and text-based assignments, but we are also actively developing new assessment policies. We are therefore looking for someone who not only has experience with a range of assessment formats but also brings enthusiasm and creativity to further develop them.
What you will do
- Advise on, support, and (re)design assessment policies, assessment programmes, and assessment plans at faculty, programme, and course level.
- Support programmes in preparing for accreditation and review processes.
- Provide advice on appropriate assessment formats, quality assurance, and assessment-related regulations.
- Translate assessment theory into daily educational practice and collect relevant best practices.
- Identify trends and best practices and translate them into feasible improvements.
- Contribute to projects related to educational innovation and assessment quality, such as curriculum revisions.
- Collaborate actively with education coordinators, policy officers, educational technologists, and staff involved in teacher professionalisation.
What you bring
Do you recognise yourself in the following?
- A connecting thinker – You balance theory and practice in assessment, with a clear sense of feasibility and stakeholder engagement.
- Experienced professional – You hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in Educational Sciences, Education Studies, or a related field.
- Experienced in assessment – You have experience with assessment in higher education, for example as a course coordinator, educational advisor, or in a similar role. You also have experience in assessment design, quality assurance, or assessment policy.
- Strong communicator – You can easily engage with lecturers, coordinators, and policy officers.
- Proactive and curious – You keep up with trends, explore (international) best practices, and translate these into concrete improvements.
- Team player – You enjoy working collaboratively and get energy from sharing knowledge.
- Language skills – You communicate fluently in Dutch and English, both orally and in writing.
